Youth charity business launch hailed as success

A special business launch and information evening held at the Foxlowe Arts Centre by a Leek-based charity was hailed as a success with over 40 people attending the event.

Youth charity, @21 used the platform to launch their business campaign, celebrate their recent Lottery award and tell the audience all about their vital work with young people in Leek.

@21 is based in Market Street and has been running for 25 years. It provides facilities, support, and activities for young people, many who are at risk.  In 2014 central funding for the project disappeared when Staffordshire County Council closed all its youth services and since then a determined group of dedicated local volunteers have pitched in to keep the youth club open.

It plays a vital role in helping and protecting youngsters in the area by providing youth workers, a base, an activity centre, structure, and people to talk to in time of crisis.

After networking and canapes, the formal proceedings were opened by Leek Town Mayor, Lyn Swindlehurst. There were presentations by @21 trustee Jane Tattersall, youth worker Sarah Pruce, Chair of the @21 Action Group, Suzanne Lawson and @21 fundraiser, Michelle Cohen.

Michelle Cohen said: “It was great to get so many people in one room to hear all about the activities of @21 Leek.

“We have made real strides forward in 2021 with the formation of our action Group and our Lottery Award.

“The more businesses we engage with, the more young people we can interact with.”

The event was sponsored by Leek based LSGK Accountants. LSGK director Jed Eatough added: “I decided to get involved with @21 because they do a fantastic job helping young people to gain the skills and values they need for work and life. They are the workers and citizens of the future so its in all our interest to ensure they get as good a start in life as possible.”
